Born in Brussels, Belgium, Mathilde moved to Brooklyn to pursue her MFA from Pratt Institute. Since her introduction into the arts, Mathilde has been curious about the interplay between the artist and the audience, and the communication between the two sides. No stranger to jumping out of her comfort zone throughout her creative development, Mathilde sought out new techniques during her master’s program.
Starting with a major in photography, she quickly worked using ceramics before discovering acrylic painting in the past two years. She found the medium offered her freedom of communication that she had pursued but not quite found with photography. Painting allowed her to represent her observations on today’s society in her own way, eschewing the expectations attributed to this medium and developing a self-taught approach that alludes to elementary scenes of our common imagination.
